More experiments on the molding front. I'm using 28mm since its large and forgiving but the techniques could work for any scale once mastered.
Heres my current WIP:
Keep in mind the clay, yes clay, is still wet so I haven't had a chance to clean the flash or tidy things up. Its still looking pretty good, I'd say!
The casting material? Simple, air-drying clay. I plan to fill gaps with epoxy and PVA, then spray with a solid matte varnish or two call it complete. Woohoo, cheapness!
All told: I probably spent a few cents worth of clay on these casts. So wrong yet so right!

Nice going, Blaster! Man, you can't help but love Instant Mold!!
ReplyDeleteIt really is like the adorable puppy of modeling supplies :)
DeleteInstant mold? Looks interesting. I hadn´t heard of it and now I´ve looked it up it Looks very easy to use and Price wise not bad either.
ReplyDeleteIts pretty economical, yeah. I plan to use it to help me cast non-bendy swords and things for 1/72 as well as for textured shields.
DeleteHi, I may ask how "agressive" is that insttamold to pieces ? I meant, pouring silicone sure is a mess but won't apply almost any pressure to the model. That matters when you own an original piece made by you and it may be fragile (and unique).
ReplyDeleteSo would you tell how soft is it when workable ? I'm a bit affraid of buying/using it yet...
The hotter you get the mold, the easier it is to work. You don't want to overheat it of course (I've done that on accident), just get it hot enough to be extremely pliable. I use a heatlamp because it saves me the trouble of boiling water over and over. If you get the mold hot as hell you could easily cast a fragile miniature I'd say.
DeleteI vote you buy it and give it a whirl. I'm pretty sure everyone can find a use for this stuff. Its also reusable so thats a huge plus!
Hey thanks... will give it a try then... at least might prove useful for casting weapons so I save sculpting them each time...
DeleteI'm impressed. I've had good luck using IM to duplicate low-relief textures etc. But the most 3-D thing I've ever duped was a half a barrel in 15mm. Doing an entire figure, even in parts, looks challenging.

ReplyDelete(edited for typo) Remember that Oyumaru and Instant mold are the same thing. Oyumaru is often cheaper, depending on where you live.
